Through last Wednesday, the city's 311 service had received more than 21,000 reports regarding rat sightings, compared to 15,000 in the same period previous year. In the most recent fiscal year, health checks to look for signs of "active rats" nearly quadrupled. Leptospirosis, a bacterial illness that may cause catastrophic liver and kidney damage, has also been reported 15 times this year. According to health experts, it is mainly transmitted in the city via rat urine. One of the cases resulted in death.
Rats had to hunt more outside when restaurants closed. Due to financial limitations in the Sanitation Department, gutters and street-corner baskets were blocked with waste. Illegal dumping is on the rise. Residential trash increased as a result of the majority of individuals being stranded at home.
