Room Preparation Checklist for Bed Bug Treatments
Preparing your home in before treatment is essential for complete and effective bed bug management. Follow these steps to ensure success:
1. Remove all bedding and linens from every mattress and wash in hot water. Clear all items from under the bed. Mattresses and box springs should be stood upright against a wall.
2. If mattresses or box springs are heavily infested, they should be discarded. When treating mattresses, use zip-up bed bug covers afterward—available directly from us.
3. Sofas and chairs (if used for sleeping) must be stripped.
4. Empty all drawers and closets. Clothing only requires 15 minutes at high heat to kill bed bugs. Place cleaned items in new, sealed plastic bags. Do not return items to dressers or closets until 10 days after the second treatment.
5. Place all bagged items in the kitchen or dining area so treatments are not obstructed.
6. Move furniture away from walls to allow full access for our technicians.
7. Remove hanging pictures from walls, vacuum their backs, and place them together for treatment.
8. Take CDs, books, and other shelf items out of bookcases. Inspect closely for bed bugs, wipe with a damp cloth, and seal in plastic bags.
9. Vacuum the entire home and empty the vacuum bag outside immediately.
10. Avoid using over-the-counter sprays like Raid—these interfere with our treatments.
11. All occupants, including pets, must leave the treated area for 2–4 hours (or longer if you have asthma, are pregnant, or have infants under 6 months old). Do not walk barefoot or lie on mattresses until treatment products have dried.
Bed bugs are commonly introduced through used mattresses, furniture, luggage, or even on clothing after visiting an infested home. These pests are nocturnal, hiding in cracks during the day and emerging at night to feed on you.
