The summer pest war is upon us

Now that summer is nearly here, we see changes in precipitation and temperatures sparking new growth and awaking pests. As it gets warmer the summer pests begin their pans to end your enjoyment of the outdoors. Carpenter ants, mosquitos, spiders, termites, mice and rats are among the soldiers in this reemergence. It is crucial to protect your family and property from the damage and dangers of these pests. Read more below for some of the risks associated with these warm weather pests.

Carpenter Ants
These summer insects do not eat the wood, but rather excavate it to build a nest. Carpenter ants prefer nesting outdoors, but they can also be attracted indoors. Once indoors, these insects create the tunnel in wood, colonize the walls of your home and compromise it's structural integrity.

Mosquitos
The "buzz" that floats in a dark room at night can be crazy for everyone. The irritating itching bite isn't the only thing to worry about. Mosquito-borne diseases can cause serious illness in you and your family, including West Nile virus, Zika virus, dengue fever, Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE), Western equine encephalitis (WEE), St. Louis encephalitis and chikungunya fever.

Spiders
Most spiders found throughout the United States are harmless, but both brown recluse spiders and black widow spiders are highly toxic and can be fatal if you are bitten. Most spiders are not toxic or have a very delicate part of their mouth that cannot penetrate human skin, but being around is not so much fun! The best way to control spiders running and jumping in and around your home is to control the food supply around your home. Keep in mind that reducing other insects around your home will reduce their food source, as spiders eat other insects. Most web-spinning spiders prefer to stay close to the light source as it helps catch flying insects that are attracted to the light. Spiders are lonely in nature-they are not social insects that live in large groups like ants and bees. As hunters, they like to work on their own and don't share food. Therefore, unlike bee and ant infections, which resolve when the queen is killed and the colony collapses, spiders can be effectively killed one at a time.

Termites
These summer bugs are carnivorous insects known for their strict appetite for wood. Like bees and ants, they are social insects and live in colonies. They are usually underground (soil-dwelling) insects, but they can be a serious pest when found inside homes and businesses.

Mice & Rats
Rodents can transmit many potentially harmful diseases and directly to humans through their bites, encounters or urine or indirectly through vectors (infected fleas that then bite humans). Some common and well-known diseases transmitted by Rodents include plague, rat-bite fever, hantavirus, tularemia, lymphocytic choriomeningitis, leptospirosis, salmonella, and pathogenic E-coli infections.
